Scandinavian-style chocolate waffles made with cocoa, sour cream, and mini chocolate chips. A rich and heart-shaped twist on classic chocolate waffles!
⅓cupcocoa powderDutch-processed cocoa preferred but natural cocoa works well, too
⅓cupsugar
2teaspoonsbaking powder
¾teaspoonfine salt
3eggs
1cupsour cream
¾cupmilk
1teaspoonvanilla extract
8tablespoonsunsalted butter melted and cooled
½cupmini chocolate chipsoptional
To Serve:
Fresh berriesjam or fruit compote

Instructions
Whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
Whisk eggs together in a large bowl. Add sour cream and whisk until smooth. Add milk, vanilla and melted butter and whisk until fully combined. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir gently with rubber spatula until the mixture just comes together (It will not be entirely smooth). Fold in mini-chocolate chips if using.
Heat waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cook waffles one at a time until golden brown and crisp. Serve immediately or transfer to a 200 degree oven to keep warm. Serve waffles with fresh berries, jam, fruit compote, whipped cream, sour cream, creme fraiche, ice cream, Creamy Vanilla Sauce, and/or other toppings of your choice.
Notes
Be sure to read the instructions on your waffle maker for how much batter to use for each waffle. Mine recommends one-third cup.
For an authentically Scandinavian waffle, I recommend the heart-shaped waffle maker but any waffle maker will work with this recipe.
