If you're looking for a cozy and decadent twist on a breakfast classic, these Scandinavian-Style Chocolate Waffles are sure to become a new favorite. Made in a traditional heart-shaped waffle iron, they’re crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with deep chocolate flavor thanks to cocoa powder, mini chocolate chips, and a rich batter made with sour cream and butter.

Whether you serve them for a special breakfast or brunch or as an indulgent dessert, these chocolate waffles are a beautiful (and delicious) way to bring a bit of Scandinavian charm to your table.

In Scandinavia, waffles are especially popular on Waffle Day (Våffeldagen), celebrated on March 25th. Traditionally served with jam and whipped cream, waffles have long been a beloved treat across Sweden and Norway. This chocolate version adds a modern twist while still honoring the classic heart shape that's iconic in Scandinavian waffle irons. Looking for a more traditional waffle recipe? Ingredients

Labeled ingredients for Chocolate Waffle recipe.
    • All Purpose flour
    • Cocoa powder - I used Dutch process cocoa powder which produces a darker colored waffle and slightly richer flavor than natural cocoa powder, but both work well in this recipe.
    • Baking powder
    • Salt
    • Granulated sugar
    • Large eggs
    • Sour cream
    • Whole milk - 2 percent milk or plant-based milk will work in this recipe, too.
    • Unsalted butter
    • Vanilla extract
    • Mini-chocolate chips - These are optional but really amp up the chocolate flavor!

See recipe card for exact amounts and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Cardamom Chocolate Waffles - add ½ teaspoon ground cardamom to the dry ingredients.

    Equipment

This waffle recipe uses a heart-shaped waffle maker to achieve that Scandinavian look, but you can certainly make this recipe in any waffle maker you have at home, regardless of shape.

    How to Make Chocolate Waffles

Dry ingredients for chocolate waffles in a bowl with a whisk.
    • Step 1: Whisk flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a medium bowl. Set aside.
Wet ingredients for chocolate waffles in a bowl with a whisk.
    • Step 2: Whisk eggs together in a large bowl. Add sour cream and whisk until smooth. Add milk, vanilla and melted butter and whisk until fully combined.
Chocolate waffle batter in a bowl with a rubber spatula.
    • Step 3: Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir gently with rubber spatula until the mixture just comes together (It will not be entirely smooth). Fold in mini-chocolate chips if using.

    • Step 4: Heat waffle iron according to the manufacturer's instructions. Cook waffles one at a time until golden brown and crisp. Serve immediately or transfer to a 200 degree oven to keep warm.

    Expert Tips

    • For tender waffles, don't over mix the batter when combining the dry and wet ingredients. It's okay if the batter is not completely smooth - you want it to just come together.
    • Be sure to read the instructions on your waffle maker for how much batter to use for each waffle. Mine recommends one-third cup.
    • If you are using the mini chocolate chips, you may need to carefully use a paper towel to wipe out any melted chocolate that accumulates on the waffle iron in between making each waffle.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I store these waffles?

If you are planning on eating them immediately after making the full batch, go ahead and place them on a baking sheet in a 200 degree oven to keep them warm. Leftovers can be stored, tightly wrapped, in the refrigerator. They can easily be reheated in the microwave, oven, toaster oven or even the toaster.

    Can I freeze these waffles?

Yes! They freeze really well. Simply cool them completely and wrap each waffle individually in plastic wrap. Place the individually wrapped waffles in a freezer safe bag or container and store for up to 2 months in the freezer. No need to defrost them, you can just take out as many as you need and reheat them as directed above until warmed through.

What to Serve with Chocolate Waffles

There are limitless ways to enjoy these chocolate waffles! You could keep it simple (and very American) and serve them with butter and pure maple syrup. Or add a dollop of whipped cream (my recipe for Whipped Vanilla Skyr Cream would be excellent here), sour cream or creme fraiche along with some fresh berries and/or banana slices. Any sort of jam or preserve or fruit compote would be a nice accompaniment. For a particularly Nordic touch, try lingonberry jam. This recipe for Roasted Strawberries would also be out of this world with the chocolate flavor here.

For a more dessert-like application, try drizzling these chocolate waffles with Creamy Vanilla Sauce or 3 Ingredient Salted Caramel Sauce. Ice cream would be delicious alongside, especially this Homemade Cardamom Ice Cream!
