Meet the Norwegian hot dog - delicious, and endlessly customizable. Wrapped in soft flatbread and topped with creamy potato salad, crispy onions, and classic condiments, it’s a Scandinavian street food staple perfect for summer cookouts, weeknight dinners, or celebrating Norwegian Independence Day.

In Norway, hot dogs—or pølser—are a beloved everyday food, found everywhere from gas stations to street kiosks. What makes the Norwegian version unique is the soft potato flatbread (lompe) that often replaces a traditional bun, along with a variety of regional toppings like crispy fried onions, mustard, ketchup, and a creamy potato (or sometimes shrimp) shrimp salad.

If you’re planning a Nordic-themed outdoor gathering or celebrating Norway’s Constitution Day, pair these hot dogs with classic sides like potato chips, Herbed Potato Salad with Capers and Golden Beets, a refreshing Lemon Cucumber Salad with Dill and a sweet finish like this summery Strawberry Almond Tart and vanilla ice cream.

    Ingredients

Labeled ingredients for Norwegian Hot Dogs.
    • Hot dogs - opt for the best quality hot dogs you can find.
    • Thin flatbread, lefse or tortillas - lompe (Norwegian potato flatbread) can be difficult to find, but any of these will work as a wrap for the hot dog.
    • Creamy potato salad - either store bought or homemade is fine. My recipe for Creamy Herbed Potato Salad with Buttermilk Dressing is a perfect choice and is easy to make.
    • Chopped raw onions, ketchup, mustard and crispy onions (such as the French's brand) - are optional condiments to finish everything off with Nordic style!

See recipe card for exact amounts and detailed instructions.

    Substitutions

Mustard-based American-style potato salad - A creamy potato salad with a sour cream or buttermilk base would be an authentic choice here. While a mustard-based American-style potato salad isn’t traditional, it can still be delicious here if that’s what you have on hand. Just keep in mind that its bold flavor will create a slightly different (but still tasty!) experience.

Shrimp salad - Substitute Creamy Shrimp Salad for the potato salad. Also traditional and surprisingly delicious!

How to Make Norwegian Hot Dogs

    1. Heat the hot dogs: Grill, boil, or pan-fry until warmed through and nicely browned (if grilling).
    2. Warm the flatbread: Briefly warm tortillas or flatbread on a skillet, grill or in the microwave until pliable.
    3. Assemble: Place a hot dog in the center of the flatbread. Add a generous spoonful of potato salad alongside, then drizzle with ketchup and mustard. Sprinkle raw and crispy onions over the top.
    4. Wrap and serve: Roll the flatbread around the hot dog and serve immediately.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I prepare these hot dogs ahead of time?

The hot dogs themselves are best cooked right before eating, but the potato salad can be prepped up to 2 days ahead of time (if you are making your own). Cover it tightly and store in the refrigerator until you are ready to use.

What to Serve with Norwegian Hot Dogs

Consider making a hot dog bar with a variety of different Scandinavian hot dog toppings and let guests mix and match their own. In addition to the condiments suggested here, you might also consider:

    • Danish Remoulade Sauce
    • Quick Swedish Pickled Cucumbers
    • Creamy Swedish Shrimp Salad (Skagenröra)
    • Mashed potatoes
    • Lingonberry sauce or lingonberry jam
    • Homemade Pickled Mustard Seeds
