These Swedish style hot dogs (tunnsbrödrulle) are as tasty as they are unusual: Soft flatbread surrounds warm mashed potatoes, a hot dog (or two), ketchup, mustard, crispy fried onions, lettuce greens and either shrimp salad (skagenröra) OR a simple creamy pickle relish sauce. Tunnsbrödrulle is classic street food in Sweden and it is absolutely delicious!

Why This Recipe Works
- The unique blend of mashed potatoes and a hot dog topped with your choice of creamy shrimp salad or pickled relish sauce JUST WORKS. It's a classic Swedish dish that is not to be missed.
- All of the ingredients can be prepared ahead of time. When you are ready to eat, simply grill your hot dogs and start assembling!
- It's fun and unexpected! Just when your guests are thinking, "boring old hot dogs again?" you bring these babies out and surprise everyone!
Ingredients
I'm offering you two different ways to assemble your tunnsbrödrulle: One with a creamy shrimp salad (skagenröra) on top and one without. The one without includes a creamy pickle relish sauce in place of the skagenröra. You choose! Or maybe do a combination of both.
With Skagenröra:
- You can find my recipe for Tunnbröd (Soft Swedish Flatbreads) here. No time to make your own? No problem! Use a large flour tortilla, a piece of store bought naan or any other soft flatbread or wrap-style bread instead.
- If you can get your hands on a Swedish brand of hot dogs, great! But as this is unlikely unless you live in the Scandinavian region, feel free to use any brand of hot dog you like.
- Use your own recipe for mashed potatoes or find mine here. You could even mix up a quick batch of instant mashed potatoes if you were really in a hurry.
- The skagenröra (Swedish shrimp salad) comes together quickly and easily. You can find my recipe here.
- The remaining topping bring lots of big flavor and a little crunch: ketchup, mustard (preferably a Dijon or Swedish mustard), crispy fried onions (purchased or homemade are fine), and lettuce greens to finish.
With Creamy Pickle Relish Sauce (No Skagenröra):
- You'll find the same ingredients for this version except that in place of the skagenröra I've included equal parts sweet pickle relish and prepared mayonnaise. This creates a deliciously creamy sauce to use in place of the shrimp salad.
How to Make This Recipe
- If you are not making the skagenröra (or want to try both toppings), stir equal parts of mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish together in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Cook the hot dogs (on the grill, stove or microwave).
- Lay a piece of flatbread on a clean work surface or plate. Slather on a layer of warm mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with a handful of crispy fried onions.
- Lay a hot dog (or two if you are hungry) over the top of the mashed potato layer.
- Drizzle with ketchup and mustard.
- Add a couple of spoonfuls of skagenröra or the creamy pickled relish sauce.
- Finish with a handful of greens and another scattering of crispy fried onions.
- Roll up and eat immediately! YUM!
Expert Tips
- I serve mine flat on the plate and don't try to roll it up until I'm ready to eat to prevent the tunnbröd from getting soggy and falling apart.
- You might consider a knife and fork along side this one. It's messy (in a good way!)
- When serving this dish to guests, it's easiest to give them a tutorial, lay out the ingredients and let them assemble their own.
FAQs
No problem! Just use a large flour tortilla or a piece of store-bought naan or another purchased flatbread or wrap-style bread. There are many brands out there these days.
Yes! Simply use vegan hot dogs, skip the shrimp salad and make the creamy pickle relish sauce using a vegan mayo. Be sure to follow the vegan instructions for the mashed potatoes.
You can make all of the components ahead of time, but the tunnsbrödrulle is best if assembled right before enjoying.
