These Swedish Hot Dogs (tunnbrödrulle) are a traditional, flavorful twist on classic hot dog fare. Wrapped in soft flatbread and piled high with mashed potatoes, crispy fried onions and Creamy Swedish Shrimp Salad (Skagenröra), this is a hot dog experience like no other.

It might sound unusual, but trust me—it’s absolutely delicious. With its mix of creamy, crunchy, salty, and tangy components, tunnbrödrulle is the ultimate indulgent comfort food.

    Traditional tunnsbrödrulle on a plate.

Tunnbrödrulle is a beloved street food in Sweden, often served at food trucks and kiosks. It’s popular after concerts or nights out, but also shows up at casual summer gatherings or even Midsummer parties for a quirky, crowd-pleasing option.

    Ingredients

I'm offering you two different ways to assemble your tunnbrödrulle: One with a creamy shrimp salad (skagenröra) on top and one without. The one without includes a creamy pickle relish sauce in place of the skagenröra. You choose! Or maybe do a combination of both.

    With Skagenröra:

Labeled ingredients for Tunnsbrödrulle with shrimp salad.
    • Flatbread - You can find my recipe for Tunnbröd (Soft Swedish Flatbreads) here. No time to make your own? No problem! Use a large flour tortilla, a piece of store bought naan or any other soft, thin flatbread or wrap-style bread instead.
    • Hot Dogs - If you can get your hands on a Swedish brand of hot dogs, great! But as this is unlikely unless you live in the Scandinavian region, feel free to use any brand of hot dog you like.
    • Mashed Potatoes - Use my recipe or your own. You could even mix up a quick batch of instant mashed potatoes or purchase them from the local deli if you were are in a hurry.
    • Skagenröra (Swedish shrimp salad) - optional but very traditional. If shrimp isn't your thing, see the version with Creamy Pickle Relish Sauce instead below.
    • Ketchup, mustard (preferably a Dijon or Swedish mustard), crispy fried onions and lettuce - These remaining optional toppings bring lots of big flavor and a little crunch.

With Creamy Pickle Relish Sauce (No Skagenröra):

Labeled ingredients for Tunnsbrödrulle without shrimp salad.
    • You'll find the same ingredients for this version except that in place of the skagenröra I've included equal parts sweet pickle relish and prepared mayonnaise. This creates a deliciously creamy sauce to use in place of the shrimp salad.

See recipe card for exact amounts and detailed instructions.

How to Make Swedish Hot Dogs (tunnbrödrulle)

Mashed potatoes and crispy onions on flatbread.
    • Step 1: If you are not making the skagenröra (or want to try both toppings), stir equal parts of mayonnaise and sweet pickle relish together in a small bowl. Set aside. Cook the hot dogs (on the grill, stove or in the microwave). Lay a piece of flatbread on a clean work surface or plate. Slather on a layer of warm mashed potatoes. Sprinkle with a handful of crispy fried onions.
Mashed potatoes, hot dog, ketchup and mustard on flatbread.
    • Step 2: Lay a hot dog (or two if you are hungry) over the top of the mashed potato layer. Drizzle with ketchup and mustard.

    • Step 3: Add a couple of spoonfuls of skagenröra or the creamy pickled relish sauce.

    • Step 4: Finish with a handful of greens and another scattering of crispy fried onions. Roll up and eat immediately.

    Expert Tips

    • I serve mine flat on the plate and don't try to roll it up until I'm ready to eat to prevent the tunnbröd from getting soggy and falling apart.
    • You might consider a knife and fork along side this one. It's messy (in a good way!)
    • When serving this dish to guests, it's easiest to give them a tutorial, lay out the ingredients and let them assemble their own.

    Recipe FAQs

I don't want to make homemade tunnbröd. What else can I use?

No problem! Just use a large flour tortilla or a piece of store-bought naan or another purchased thin flatbread or wrap-style bread.

Can I make this recipe vegan?

Yes! Simply use vegan hot dogs, skip the shrimp salad and make the creamy pickle relish sauce using a vegan mayo. Be sure to follow the vegan instructions for the mashed potatoes.

Can I make this recipe in advance?

You can make all of the components ahead of time, but the tunnsbrödrulle is best if assembled right before enjoying.
